How MapleGreen Helps Achieve the Goal

Through many established policies and projects, MapleGreen is actively contributing to the company’s material Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For each of our currently aligned Goals, we plan to develop additional initiatives that help fully achieve the SDGs by 2030 and also inspire other companies to follow suit.

Why this Goal is Important

Sustaining the health of people is proven to sustain the prosperity of society, and MapleGreen has the ability and responsibility to do so starting with our cherished employees.

3.6: By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents ❏     Guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of community members and employees through proper vehicle and equipment operating and maintenance training
3.4: By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being ❏     Encouraging an open dialogue between and among employees and managers to promote awareness of mental, emotional, and physical health topics to promote employee well-being

❏     Offering employee wellness messages and personal health days to sustain healthy bodies and minds

❏     Offering ample time for employees to take rest and lunch breaks each day to prevent becoming overworked, especially during extreme heat days

3.9: By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination ❏     Ensuring that vehicles and equipment meet emission standards, are in good working order, and have properly functioning emission control systems (mufflers, filters, & sensors)

❏     Sustaining the health of people and the planet by preventing exposure to hazardous chemical pollution and contamination

3.d: Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks ❏     Providing proper personal and vehicle sanitation products and training to ensure workplaces and gathering areas remain free from bacteria (facial masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, & sanitary gloves) to prevent increase in global health events such as Covid-19 and to reduce stress on local health care systems

Additional Actions Include the Following

  • Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for arborist crew members, office personnel, and community members by employing knowledgeable and skilled employees
  • Providing a healthy living wage to all employees, with bonuses, promotions and raises based on excellent and safe work performance, vehicle and equipment usage, increased experience, training and education
  • Supplying safety equipment for arborist crew members (high visibility shirts/sweaters/ winter coats/vests/rain jackets/hip waders, hard helmets, ear muffs, chainsaw pants, steel toe boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, helmet visors, gloves)
  • Equipping employees with reusable water coolers to encourage hydration and minimizing plastic bottled water waste
  • Organizing crew members to successfully complete First Aid and CPR courses

Future Action

Looking to Canadian and North American arborist companies for inspiration, as well as other major businesses that demonstrate a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, we will be introducing the following initiatives to support Good Health and Well-being:

  • Encourage and provide further training and education for all employees
  • Develop an educational pamphlet that will help to increase employee and stakeholder awareness of ways to contribute to SDG Goal #3 from home and within their daily lives
  • Support and learn from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that directly contribute to SDG #3 targets and indicators such as The Red Cross, United Way, Doctors Without Borders, etc. to broaden our impact on the Goal
  • Strengthen the World Health Organization’s tobacco control framework
